What is ageism?

Ageism is buried deeply in our modern culture. The premium that is placed upon youth is blatant in TV commercials, magazines, fashion, and our mind set. Young workers are favored over those who are older, jokes about getting old and being “over the hill” are standard, especially in the greeting card industry. Old age is depicted as a time when everyone wears hearing aids and walks with a walker. Younger health care workers patronizingly address their older patients as “honey” or “sweetie” or “young lady.” All of these things are harmful to our society and especially to its older members.
