As you get older, and especially right after retiring, you may find that you have more time on your hands to do… what exactly? A really beneficial thing to do that’ll help you help you spend your time wisely and that’s also key to aging well is getting involved. There are so many ways out there to get involved on multiple different levels – personal, community, state – which makes it something really easy to do. There are tons of reasons to get involved as a senior citizen, but here are three big ones:

1. Getting Involved Helps Keep You Active
On the most basic level, getting involved simply makes you do something. This something doesn’t have to be anything sporty or physical necessarily. Going to a weekly poker game night, volunteering at a museum, or playing in a chamber music ensemble are all completely valid activities. No one likes to feel bored or stagnant and unfortunately the chances of this happening often tend to increase as we become senior citizens. Feeling connected and committed to some sort of outside activity is thus quite helpful in keeping us active and away from monotony.

2. Getting Involved Helps Keep You Social
In most cases, being involved automatically gets you into a social setting, likely with your peers. In the poker night example mentioned earlier, talking, playing, and interacting with other people are all part of the game. We are by nature social creatures and appreciate being with others. On a broad scale, it’s easier for senior citizens, especially those who are retired, to stay in isolated or lonely atmospheres. Thus, being involved helps keep you healthy by getting you out there and socializing like we need and want to.

3. Getting Involved Provides Opportunities to Give Back
As nice as it is to receive, giving to someone else makes us feel really great as well. Being involved, particularly on a personal or community level, opens many doors to give back to others around you. They say that with age comes wisdom, and that wisdom could be really helpful to, say, a middle school student who needs tutoring or to your local library. Tutoring at the local middle or high school in your community or volunteering at the library would not only make a difference to the people of your community but would also make you feel good just for helping.

When getting involved, don’t try and limit yourself too much. There will always be the couple of things that you’ve always enjoyed doing, but now could be a great time to try doing something new that maybe you’ve always wanted to. Mixing it up will not only keep things more exciting and dynamic but will ultimately be healthier for you both in body and mind.

Over the next few years, many Baby Boomers will be facing retirement and with it the label that they’ve reached that, how do you say it, more “mature” age. However, retirement doesn’t, and probably shouldn’t, be spent preoccupied by the idea of aging or getting older. On the contrary, retirement presents a somewhat ironic opportunity to get in touch with things from your past. Now this is not a call to remember those crazy college days or how incredibly awful it was to walk to school in knee-deep snow uphill both ways. (Although, reminiscing can be fun!) It’s more tangible than that.

Instead of just thinking about the things you used to like doing, it can be quite rewarding to try picking them up again. For example, try reading your favorite book from when you were a teenager or watching that movie that you and your friends all went to see together in the theater. With things like books and movies, it’s particularly amazing that in addition to all the moments you remember standing out you’ll pick up on a surprising number of details and “little things” you had never noticed before. Or perhaps you’ll now have a startling different opinion or new take on the whole thing. It’s cool how the experience will make you think and realize how you can open up new perspectives for yourself.

For some people, remembering things you used to enjoy doing will bring up memories of activities that you were sadly never able to continue doing. At one point or another, many of us end up having to give up doing something we like because we don’t have the time, energy, or opportunity to continue it. But, chances are there was something, some sort of spark, that drew you to that thing in the first place; and, if you truly enjoyed it then, you likely still will now. You might even get something more out of it.

If you used to play an instrument, one thing to try is picking it back up again. Music is something enjoyed by nearly everyone and playing an instrument yourself can be both fun and relaxing. Playing an instrument also provides a good avenue to meet and play with other people. Getting back into some other art form, like painting or writing, can also be enjoyable in a similar way. If you used to do some sort of sport or other physical activity like dance, it’s also completely possible to try those again. There are lots of adult and senior sports and athletic groups out there. Just from personal experience, you’d be surprised how many senior citizens are in dance and ballet classes.

Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean that you should stop exercising! Even if you don’t feel as flexible or fast as you remember once being, doing your sport to as far an extent as you can will satisfy that sense of enjoyment that got you into the sport in the first place and will make you happy.

In getting older, it’s important and healthy to avoid feeling stagnant or stuck, both physically and mentally. Going back to some of your old favorite books and movies can help keep you mentally engaged while doing some of the activities you enjoyed when younger can help you feel physically as well as mentally active. These senses of engagement will not only make you feel good but are also an important component of healthy aging.

Whether you count the discounts being mature will have in your purse, or the wisdom you have collected in your mind, mature vs young – what is great to look forward to as you become a senior citizen will be no contest. The opportunities are out there, no matter your age, and you should look around to find them.

There are discounts at stores, as well as at the movies, and at your favorite restaurants. Or try a new one, that is always fun.

You have been through a lot these long years. You have stories to tell, and visions to talk about. You have learned something new every day for all the days you have been on this great earth. You should share your adventures and your knowledge.

Although technology was not around while we were working in our younger years, it is very easy to learn. It makes sense that if everyone knows it, it cannot be difficult. You can have your own blog to tell your stories, or make a movie and show it on the Internet. You can contact friends and family that you have not seen in years, by way of emails or your cell phone, without the fear of those great long distance costs.

And if technology does not appeal to you, you can always visit in person. Travel is a wonderful thing when you are older. You are more aware of your surroundings than you have ever been. There is a reason so many travel by recreational vehicles all over the country. There is just nothing like the kind of freedom you can experience when you are older.

It is time to give to yourself. As you explore the country, your mind, and the rest of the world, you will find mature vs young – what is great to look forward to as you become a senior citizen. It is your chance, so take it.

As you age, you may begin to worry about how you will be remembered. You want to be remembered for your accomplishments and your kindness. With all of the daily stresses you endure and all of the things that continuously keep you busy, this may not be an easy task to give enough thought to. This article, "leaving a legacy - 3 ways to leave behind part of yourself, " may be able to help you figure that out. Continue reading →

Many people think that they need to have a lot of money in order to leave behind a legacy. This simply is not true. You can leave behind your legacy without having any money. You may even be able to do it without spending a single penny.

When you leave your legacy behind, it means that you have done something memorable or touched the life of someone else. You may do this on a very small scale or a large scale.

Many people are remembered because of the way they treat others. If you are incredibly kind to the people in your life, they will remember you fondly and you may even rub off on them. Spend time with these people and devote some time to doing interesting things with them. They may just pass on the stories they have about you to other generations.

Give your time to charities. Volunteering is a great way to help people remember you. People will recognize the kindness in your heart and your generosity. They will speak of you fondly and if you do enough service, you may even be recognized formally for it.

Teach people of all ages a valuable skill. This can be anything from teaching mathematics to teaching life lessons. People remember the people who teach them important things and those lessons can affect them positively for the rest of their lives.

What can you look forward to when getting old? There are things about aging that you did not think about in your twenties. Aging and enjoying it does not require thinking back to the years when we were teenagers and wishing to be there, it means to look forward to enjoying aging.

As we age we develop confidence in the decisions that are made and know that they are the right choices. Also as we age we become much less concerned over the opinions of other and begin to only attempt at impressing yourself. The majority of older people is very content with their life and has grown to be satisfied in all decisions made.

The first good goal in getting old is the experience you have gained. During our twenties the majority of us were trying to figure out where we wanted to be in forty years, the time has come when you are making more money in the field chosen. When we get into our sixties it is time for most to end the career they worked hard to earn respect in, the hard work has paid off and it is time to relax.

The second good thing about aging is our children have grown into wonderful adults that give us grandchildren. Third, it gets easier to slow the pace down and not have to work long hard hours. Fourth is that our social lives seem to boom as we age. There are many social gatherings to enjoy fun times with family and friends.

The fifth great thing about aging is the benefits available. Insurance rates seem to plummet as we age and we get numerous discounts for traveling and dining. The sixth benefit is one of the best, retirement. The day finally comes for giving up work to enjoy our days doing the things we enjoy, hobbies, gardening and socializing.

The seventh thing is getting to say whatever we want and getting by with it. Those of us who look forward to getting old – 7 great things about it listed above are only a small amount of the great things about aging. The aging process is something that we have all worked hard for; we deserve all of the benefits that come with it.

Your diet is so important for your heart and your brain, especially. So, feed your body with nutritious, delicious meals that are good for those things. Limit your sugar and salt intake. Eat fibrous foods, such as raw fruits and vegetables. And stay clear of too many carbohydrates.

For exercise, walking is most convenient for some. You can also see results pretty quickly. So, choose a nice path on which to walk. And pace yourself, according to the way you feel. You do not want to overdue it. Increase your time and speed as your body tells you to do.

A real health killer is stress. It will destroy you, if you let it take hold of your mind and body. Leave it somewhere. Get rid of it. It is never going to be something that you need, so discard it. You will be glad that you did.

Travel may be just the thing to keep your mind fit in your later years. When you see other surroundings, and see how other people live, it opens up the mind to other ideas. Your mind should stay sharp in your older years, so keep it busy. You can join clubs, or volunteer for charities. Even starting a business might be something you would like to try. All of these ideas are also good for the soul.

And finally, do something you have never done. Try a restaurant that prepares food from another country. Go to Las Vegas. Take a cruise. These things may not be as much money as you think, but you will never know until you research them. And now we have emailing. So, you can find people you have not heard from in a long time and contact them. All these are ways to healthy aging – top 10 tips for staying fit.

As kids, you seem to always think of your parents as superheroes. They are your perpetual shelter, your security and comfort, your protectors. They can neither get sick nor get hurt, and they will live forever. Although as you get older, you know that this scenario does not exist. It as you watch them age that you begin to understand the generational differences – why your older years will be very different from how your parents aged.

In today’s modern society, the aging process is quite long. Sometimes you don’t even notice this process until something significant happens. This can come in the form of a death of a close family member.

As you watch your own parents’ age, you begin to notice some of the tell-tale signs. At first there may be some gray hair, followed by the wrinkling and loosening of the skin on the face. This may be followed by more complicated problems like arthritis or mental deterioration.

Witnessing the slow progression of these events can be extremely hard to watch. You want to remember them when they were spry and active, and witty and charming. However, the process by which we age is changing quite dramatically.

It was only a few generations ago that people in a non-third world society was only expected to live between 40 to 50 years old on average. In just over a century, this life expectancy value has almost doubled to about 80 years old.

Throughout the 20th century, significant medical and health-related advances allowed us to combat diseases and complications that have challenged mankind for millennia. We have learned so much about how to keep our bodies and minds healthy and strong. And as we increase this knowledge through further research, we can expect the average life span to increase in the years to come.

For each new generation facing the potential for longer life spans, there will be new challenges to face in the aging process. The way that they live out their elder years will be much different than yours, much in the same way your older years will be different than your parents.

There are great things about being young and about being mature. But if you weigh out mature vs young – what is great to look forward to as you become a senior citizen, the mature side will win every time, as far as perks. There will always be great opportunities no matter how old or young you are. That is the beauty of this life.

Discount stores may have a senior day to take advantage of. You can eat more cheaply at restaurants and see a movie for cheaper. And if they do not ask your age and assume you are younger than a senior, well, that always feels good.

The years that you have survived on this earth are a blessing. And the knowledge that you have gained with each day is a special gift. This gift is to be shared among others. You can converse with friends about the world, or with your grandchildren. But the visions that you have seen and the stories that you have should be told.

Technology today is a wonderful thing. It barely existed as we grew up in our working days. We did not have cell phones or the Internet. Now we can talk to friends and relatives in our country that we have not seen in years via email and our phones, without the fear of enormous long distance charges. You can even learn to blog and get on various social sites. It is not hard at all, for anyone, if you learn it.

If you do not care much for technology, and you are healthy enough for extensive travel, then by all means, do so. There is nobody to call and tell that you will not be at work today. There is no one to ask permission for you to go. There is a freedom out there unsurpassed, when you are old enough to enjoy it.

It is time to live for your own pleasures. It is time to expand the mind, and see what is out there in the world for you. Take advantage of mature vs young – what is great to look forward to as you become a senior citizen. There is more out there than you think. You just have to get out and look for it.

Are there really benefits to getting old?

Confidence and believing in decisions we make are only a drop in the bucket to the benefits surrounding people as they age. The older we get the easier it is to not worry about what others think, it is more about impressing ourselves as opposed to others. Older individuals are content with their lives and satisfied with decisions they made. Age is a number and it is what we make of it, but the following seven things are added benefits to aging.

One benefit of aging is that you will have more experience in the work field, which translates to more money. The majority of people started their career in their twenties when it was a constant struggle to find what it was you wanted to do for the next forty years. By the time you are in your sixties, the career is over or almost over so all of the hard work has paid off.

The second benefit is the children are grown and you now can spend fun quality time with the grandchildren. The third benefit is the older we get the easier it is to slow down and begin putting the long work hours on the back burner. The fourth benefit is that socialization seems to burst at the seams as we age. There are also social outings with family and friends to look forward to.

The fifth of the benefits are the actual benefits. There are so many reduced rates as you age. The insurance rates drop dramatically, traveling offers discounts and dining out has many benefits as well. Number six of the benefits is that you get to retire. When the time comes when you retire, the time will amaze you. There is now time to do all of the things you enjoy.

The part of getting old – 7 great things about it includes number seven which is being able say whatever you want without anyone thinking anything of it. When you reach a certain age, anything said is shrugged away as their old. Aging is a benefit that we have earned and should be enjoyed.
